The 180th anniversary of the great Abai presents an excellent opportunity for students to reflect on the concepts of «good» and «evil»

During a solemn ceremony for the presentation of state awards and prizes, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev (https://www.akorda.kz/ru/vystuplenie-prezidenta-kasym-zhomarta-tokaeva-na-torzhestvennoy-ceremonii-vrucheniya-gosudarstvennyh-nagrad-i-premiy-2492626) called on the youth to be patriotic, educated, hardworking, frugal, just, and compassionate; to actively engage in physical activity and sports; to learn what is good and reject what is bad; to avoid five harmful traits and strive toward five virtues, as taught by the great Abai.

In line with this message, on April 24, 2025, first-year students of the Russian-language department, during their study of the period of independent Kazakhstan in the “History of Kazakhstan” course, explored the President’s address and conducted a personal reflection exercise. They were asked to:

1.     Recall and write down the five things to avoid and the five things to strive for, as advised by Abai.

2.     Answer the following questions:
a) Why are Abai’s words still so relevant in today’s independent Kazakhstan?
b) What are my personal responses and actions in light of President Tokayev’s message?

The students’ responses confirmed their familiarity with the works of Abai Kunanbaev and demonstrated their ability to engage in reflective thinking. They emphasized the importance of striving for diligence, honesty, knowledge, modesty, and justice, while rejecting laziness, falsehood, envy, arrogance, and wastefulness. Furthermore, they shared their own intended actions in response to the President’s call and identified the vital role that youth play in building a Just Kazakhstan.
