METU HOSTS A MEETING WITH A WORLD-RENOWNED GUEST
The International Engineering and Technological University (METU) hosted a meeting with Rae Kwon Chung, Advisor to the UN Secretary-General on Climate Change, member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. During the meeting, the distinguished guest delivered a lecture to students, sharing his experience and insights on global climate challenges, sustainable development, and the future of the green economy. He emphasized the urgency of environmental issues in the modern world and highlighted the importance of maintaining a balance between economic development and nature.

Rae Kwon Chung is one of the key figures in shaping the global environmental agenda. He participated in the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro and is a co-author of the “green growth” concept, which promotes economic development in harmony with the environment. As part of the meeting, the Rector of the University, Darkhan Berikovich Akpanbetov, honored the distinguished guest in accordance with Kazakh national traditions by presenting him with a traditional chapan. This gesture was highly appreciated as a symbol of respect and hospitality of the Kazakh people. In addition, the guests were presented with memorable gifts reflecting national culture, once again demonstrating that METU never sends its guests away empty-handed.

Such meetings provide METU students not only with the opportunity to attend lectures, but also to engage directly with world-class experts, gain deeper insights into global challenges, and broaden their perspectives. The University will continue to foster an environment of open dialogue and knowledge exchange. The International Engineering and Technological University continues to create a meaningful platform that integrates education and science while expanding students’ global outlook.
