On 14 October 2026, Anyanwu Chukwuemeka Prince,
an instructor in the Department of Social Sciences, Humanities and World
Languages at METU University, delivered an open English lesson entitled “Travel Without Problems:
Use AI as a Co-pilot.” Thirty first-year students studying
Bioengineering and IT Marketing took part. The lesson used a problem-based
learning approach to help students apply English in real-life situations.
Participants explored common travel challenges, including lost luggage,
cancelled flights, hotel booking difficulties and language barriers. The
activities introduced travel vocabulary and provided opportunities to practise
asking for assistance and giving advice.
A distinctive feature of the lesson was
the integration of language practice with artificial intelligence. Students
wrote clear prompts in English for ChatGPT and analysed its suggested
solutions. Particular attention was paid to assessing the reliability of
AI-generated responses and recognising the need to verify information. Pair and
group work, role-plays and short presentations encouraged active participation.
During the “Travel
Rescue Challenge,” students proposed solutions to a scenario
involving lost luggage and a cancelled hotel reservation. They discussed
contacting the airline, requesting assistance and finding alternative
accommodation, using expressions with should, could, can and If I
were you….
Speaking, listening, reading and writing
tasks were closely connected. Students read travel scenarios and AI-generated
responses, prepared dialogues, presented group solutions and explained the
reasoning behind their suggestions.
The open lesson gave students
opportunities to use English to address practical challenges. Verifying and
critically evaluating AI recommendations formed an important part of the
activities, encouraging responsible decision-making.
