Language Facts: Bringing Language, Literature and Culture Together

On 27 October 2026, METU University hosted an educational round table, “Language Facts,” as part of English Language Week. Held in the university library, the event brought together students and lecturers and was organised by Kuralay Ongarovna Aitkulova, a lecturer in the Department of Social and Humanitarian Disciplines and World Languages. The meeting explored fascinating facts about languages, encouraged discussion in English and introduced students to different cultures through world literature. Students delivered presentations they had prepared and exchanged views on the role of language in education, communication and the preservation of national heritage.

A central part of the programme featured student presentations on Abai Qunanbaiuly, William Shakespeare and Alexander Pushkin. Speaking in English, participants explored the authors’ literary legacies and their contributions to the development of language. The presentation on Abai considered how his poetry, translations and Words of Edification enriched the literary and expressive possibilities of the Kazakh language. Presentations on Shakespeare and Pushkin extended the discussion to the influence of literature on language and the cultural life of society. Visual presentations supported the students’ talks and helped communicate their ideas. Preparing and presenting the material gave participants an opportunity to discuss literature in English, practise public speaking and listen to one another’s perspectives. Language practice thus became part of a broader exploration of literature and culture. The programme also included videos about polyglots. Students discussed the opportunities that multilingualism offers and reflected on the importance of curiosity, perseverance and regular practice in language learning.

The meeting highlighted the connection between valuing one’s native language and learning other languages. Presenting Abai’s legacy in English offers a way to share Kazakhstan’s cultural heritage with a wider audience, while exploring world literature helps students develop a deeper understanding of other cultures. The “Language Facts” round table provided an opportunity to use English beyond the classroom, share independently prepared work and exchange ideas openly. It formed a meaningful part of English Language Week, bringing language practice together with literary and cultural discovery.
