English Week: Sharing Ideas and Exploring Creativity in English

As part of English Week, METU University hosted an event bringing together student presentations, role-plays and video interviews. The session was led by Eleanya Nnanna Samuel, a lecturer in the Department of Social and Humanitarian Disciplines and World Languages. The event gave students an opportunity to use English to explore topics that matter to them, express their opinions and present creative work. Their presentations addressed the opportunities and risks of artificial intelligence, the impact of social media on students, useful inventions, future careers and the importance of learning English. Talks on “An Unforgettable Day of My Life” also allowed participants to share personal experiences. The programme continued with role-plays in which students acted out different situations and developed conversations in English. These activities provided practice in using vocabulary, listening and responding to others, and speaking more confidently in front of an audience.

The creative part of the session featured video interviews with teachers and students on “Friendship” and “My University - METU in 2030.” Reflections on friendship highlighted the importance of understanding and mutual support, while interviews about the university’s future revealed students’ ideas and aspirations for their learning environment. This English Week event encouraged students to go beyond presenting prepared material by sharing their own perspectives, working together and developing creative responses. Through presentations, conversations and video interviews, participants connected English language learning with everyday experiences, contemporary issues and future professional goals.
