Foreign Languages and International Education: METU Hosts English Week Events

On 29 October 2026, the International Engineering and Technological University (METU) held a series of events as part of English Week, focusing on foreign language learning, academic mobility opportunities, and the use of modern technologies in student creative projects.

One of the programme’s highlights was an interview with Karlygash Nurlanovna Shokhayeva, Director of the Department for International Cooperation. During the discussion, she spoke about the importance of foreign languages for students’ professional development, participation in international education programmes, and engagement with universities abroad.

Particular attention was given to academic mobility. Studying at partner universities enables students to explore educational approaches in other countries, deepen their subject knowledge, gain experience in intercultural communication, and broaden their career prospects. Ms Shokhayeva emphasised that proficiency in foreign languages helps students make greater use of these opportunities and adapt more confidently to an international academic environment.

The practical part of the programme combined English language learning with the use of digital tools. Students presented videos and creative projects developed using artificial intelligence technologies. Videos and short performances in English depicting university life allowed participants to demonstrate their language proficiency, creativity, and teamwork skills.

English Week events contribute to the development of students’ communication and digital skills, encourage interest in international education, and provide opportunities to apply their knowledge in practice. Such initiatives support METU’s efforts to advance international cooperation and prepare professionals who can work effectively in multilingual environments.
